Bust-length portrait.
2013-0197.
Rebecca Merritt Smith was born in Kentucky in 1832, married J. T. Austin in 1863. Arrived in California in 1865 by steamer. Beginning in 1866, she began to study native vegetation, collecting plant specimens throughout northern California and the Cascades in Oregon. Collected and exchanged plant specimens with numerous botanists in the United States and Europe. She died in 1919.
