Sherley Anne Williams discusses her novel, “Dessa Rose.” She begins by explaining that her book is about slavery during the 1800s in America. She talks about how women and slaves were never mentioned in the Constitution and had very little rights. She discusses her main character Dessa Rose, a slave who revolts against her masters because she wants her child to grow up free. Williams describes the complicated relationship between slaves and masters on a plantation. She talks about several different escape techniques slaves used to get away. She ends the interview by discussing that she is working on a film adaptation based on the book.
