Description
"Aeroject-General technicians are dwarfed by the 30-foot long propellant core of the Algol solid rocket motor as they inspect it prior to casting the propellant. The metal core is inserted into the motor chamber and postitioned in its center after which the propellant is cast or poured into the unit. After the propellant cures and hardens, the core is removed to provide a tunnel through the motor. It is the propellant surface along the tunnel wall that ignites first; during motor operation, the propellant burning surface moves toward the chamber wall until the propellant is consumed."
