Photo shows numerous people dancing at the Echo Park Cuban Festival. The biggest Cuban presence in the neighborhood of Echo Park comes each May. The Echo Park Cuban Festival is the only major celebration in Los Angeles of Dia de la Independencia de Cuba (Cuban Independence Day), which commemorates the Caribbean Island's freedom from Spain on May 20, 1902. Thousands of people gather for this festival, which is usually held on the birthday of Cuban writer, poet, and patriot Jose Marti (1853-1895). The free family festival includes Cuban music, dancing, food, and art. Photograph dated May 18, 1997.
