The photo shows the backfire which was set to keep the Topanga Canyon flames out of Mandeville Canyon, where more than 50 costly homes were periled. The backfire was to burn a firebreak through the brush. But the flames began to leap across the ridge, dangerously near the homes. Photo date: November 25, 1938.
