Description
Republican mural, Ballymurphy Road, 2002. Republican woman wearing Cumann na mBan uniform, holding armalite rifle, other volunteers marching with flags of Irish provinces in background. Six portraits of women (one 14 year old girl); from top right, Anne Marie Pettigrew, Maura Meehan, Anne Parker, Catherine McGartland, Eileen Mackin, and Dorothy Maguire. All died in the period 1971-3 in differing circumstances: Anne Marie Pettigrew (died when her bomb detonated prematurely), Maura Meehan (30-year old IRA volunteer who was shot and killed by the British Army in October 1971 as she warned residents of British Army house raids in Cape Street in the Lower Falls, Belfast), Anne Parker (an 18-year old IRA bomber who died in a premature bomb explosion on North Howard Street, Lowe Falls, Belfast in August 1972), Catherine McGartland, Eileen Mackin (a 14-year old shot by a Loyalist sniper whilst walking along Springhill Avenue in May 1973) and Dorothy Maguire (a 19-year old IRA volunteer shot and killed with Maura Meehan).
