Description
A Salvadoran army soldier stands guard at an outpost in the countryside near the town of Perquín. The soldier, photographed from behind, is part of a U.S.-trained infantry group known as the Ramón Belloso Battalion. The guerrillas occupied the town of Perquín on October 1982 but in the first couple of weeks of February 1983, Colonel Miguel Antonio Mendez and the Belloso Battalion recaptured it. The guerrillas assaulted the Belloso Batallion command post in Perquín on February 23 forcing Mendez and the battalion to retreat from Perquín. The Ramón Belloso Battalion formed in 1982 with the assistance of the United States. It was one of the most aggressive military units during the Civil War, with its men trained at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and was nicknamed the "Gringo Battalion."
