Photograph of skip rider named Dave Depue. Donor/Source: Ron Hanford (owned by Glenn Way) GMW 1360921.
The skip rider's name was Dave Depue, a French Canadian who was brought to Storrie specifically because of his skill at this job. "He worked for the Canadian government on skips up there, he was a pretty good man." The two lines behind the skip that are close together are the signal lines, and the signal stick (stuck on opposite side of skip from the rider) had a piece of copper nailed to it that would ring a bell in the hoist house when the rider touched both lines. It was common for the skip rider to move around on the skip while it was in motion , which accounts for his being on the side opposite to the signal wires. - At this moment the skip is not moving. The cable in the foreground was attached to the stiff-legged derrick, and the skip rider is waiting for the derrick to be dragged up hill into place so that these sections of the penstock can be unloaded. Notice that only a few of the rivers have been put in place. The sections were shipped up from Western Pipe and Steel just as you see them on the skip, and the riveting would be finished off once several of the sections were in place, GMW says that sometimes he would run up to 100 feet of riveters. 'They didnt let ya' fool around up there, the Great Western Power boss was kinda pushy" AudioTape #13A-251
