Image of a certificate recognizing William Raikes' tour of duty as a private of Company "G" in the "75th Regiment Ohio Volunteers Infantry" during the American Civil War handwritten in ink and framed by a design for a national monument dedicated to the "Grand Army of the Republic and Kindred Societies" featuring statues of soldiers, women representing the goddess Columbia and History, American bald eagles, and scenes depicting a soldier's goodbye, fighting on the field, women's work on the home front, and lessons in patriotism.
"Published by The Easel Monument Association, / Chicago, Illinois."--text, bottom center margin. "[?]ned by The Monumental Bronze Co. Bridgeport, [Conn.]"--text, bottom left margin. "Copyrighted A.D. 1885 By J.W. Carnahan. All Rights Reserved"--text, bottom right margin. "This fixture bearing a synopsis of the record of service of Wm. Raikes was presented by him to his wife Mary, as an object lesson in patriotism. Feb. 15th 1897."--text, ms. in ink, center of image. "This design for a National Monument was dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic and Kindred Societies by the Easel Monument Association and by them to be erected to the Rank and File of the Union Army. October A.D. 1898."--text, bottom center of image.
