Juliet begins the interview talking about her son before the accident that paralyzed him. Juliet also discusses her career as a social worker and ethics philosopher and how her work prepared and did not prepare her for dealing with her son’s injury. For the majority of the interview, Juliet talks about her and her son’s quality of life after the accident, how they communicated, and how they renewed their relationship as mother and son. At the end of the interview, Juliet talks about learning that her son was in a locked physical state—unable to move or breathe on his own while still being fully cognizant—and that her son would die a slow painful death. Finally, Juliet talks about the process behind her son’s decision to remove his artificial life support and end his life.
