Description
Note: Ähnliches Bild cf. D-30.22.071. (PST). Note translation: Similar photo cf. D-30.22.071. (PST). - Published as no 59 in the album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer' (= 'Eighty pictures of the Gold Coast (West Africa) taken by the missionary Fritz Ramseyer'), Neuchâtel 1895. - Caption there: "Accident while travelling. There are neither draught animals nor streets on the Gold Coast, especially in inland areas. So the missionaries must either travel on foot or be carried in hammocks by two Africans. This second mode of travel is not the pleasant matter it might appear. The rough and narrow footpaths and the many fallen trees often cause the carriers to stumble and the missionary is - as the picture shows - thrown onto a hard tree trunk or into the mud."
