Description
Councilwoman Jan Perry (9th District) poses with young Xin Ling Stein in front of the Midnight Mission located at 601 S. San Pedro Street. Council woman Perry's district encompasses Central City East, which faces the unique and challenging problems that accompany homelessness. Since her election, Perry has worked aggressively to begin rebuilding this community also known as Skid Row. Re-elected in January of 2006 by the Western cities to serve another 4-year term, she also serves as the Assistant Pro Tempore for the Los Angeles City Council, making her the first African-American woman to hold this position in the history of the city. The Midnight Mission is centered in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles. Tom Liddecoat, nicknamed "father of the poor", founded the Mission in 1914. Since its opening, it has grown by leaps and bounds and now offers numerous services, such as: guest services, recovery services, educational training, Project Safe Sleep, a mobile kitchen and even family housing. Photo dated: August 3, 2005.
