Description
Image of boat designer William Burgess standing inside a boat he designed named the Miss Iona in a vacant lot in Santa Monica, California. The boat has "Burgess" "Santa Monica" "Universal Blue Jacket" and "Miss Iona" printed on the outside and a hooded falcon logo on the rudder.
Title devised by cataloger based on information on envelope in which negative was received: "Santa Monica, Sgt. Burgess boat." Date supplied by cataloger based on similar photograph published in the Taylor, Texas, Daily Press, January 5, 1931, page 4, with the caption: "Nearing completion at Santa Monica, Calif. at the hands of its inventor-builder, Lieut. William Burgess of the Santa Monica Fire Department, this unusual craft will soon be ready for its projected 2,237-mile jaunt to Honolulu, which Lieut. Burgess believes it will complete in three and one-half days."
