Description
Photograph of the construction of the Jorgenson constant angle arch diversion dam on Grizzly Forebay. Donor/Source: Ron Hanford (owned by Glenn Way) 1410623.
This photograph is of the early stages of building the Jorgenson constant angle arch diversion dam on Grizzly Forebay. The purpose of this dam was to store the water that was fed into a tunnel running northwest through the mountain to the surge chamber at the top of the Penstock at the Portal Camp. Grizzly Creek is flowing right to the left in this photo. Lord and Bishop were the contractors in charge of building this dam. (the same type of dam was built below the storage dam on Bucks Creek). Eisenhower and Nichols were the contractors who drove the tinnel from Grizzly Forebay through the mountain to the adit. They were from Montana. The track was for the ore cars used to remove the rock and debris from the dam footing. The cut was then thoroughly washed out with water. The bunkers and storage shed at the top of the photograph were filled with materials brought over from the Portal Camp in Ben Bramer's White trucks. GMW made very few trips over to this camp. Both contractos had their own electricians, and on this day he had been summed to repair the 440v feeders for the sawmill that was cutting up the timber on the lake bed site. Audio Tapes # 13A-402
