Description
The Sacramento Buffalos were a minor league/semi-pro football team that played in the California Football League throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. The club went through a number of name changes - Sacramento Statesmen, Capitol Condors, and River City Buffalos - before rebranding as the Sacramento Buffalos in 1978. Originally playing their games at James Marshall High School, they moved to the newly renovated Hughes Stadium on the campus of Sacramento City College in 1978. The Buffalos played football until 1982, when the team folded amidst financial losses.
The California Pro Football League was formed in 1973 by a group of independent teams from Fresno, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Lancaster, San Fernando, Pasadena, and Orange County. There were a number of franchise shifts in subsequent seasons. Its season was played over the summer months. The league suspended operations and folded following the 1982 season.
