This picture appears in an October 1947 newsletter with the following caption: "Originally known as Claremont Hall, Sumner Hall was the first campus building of Pomona College. It was first built as a boom hotel and later served Pomona as men's and women's dormitories, classrooms, kitchen, dining room, assembly rooom, library, guest rooms, President's Suite and office for the professor in charge. For thirty-five years it stood on College Avenue and was the girl's dormitory. In 1922 it was moved to its present location and became the administrative center of the college."
