Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated December 19, 1958 reads "Mrs. Lorraine Gilliland, 4923 Denny Ave., North Hollywood, who held title of Mrs. North Hollywood in 1956, donates toy to Sgt. William E. Dunham Jr. of inspector-instructor staff of 7th 75 mm AAA Battery, USMC, in Marine Corps annual Toys for Tots drive to end Friday. Toys will be donated to needy children by 100 recognized welfare agencies." Mrs. Gilliland is handing Dunham the toy across a counter at an ice cream shop.
