This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco."
Text written on photo: "#45. California Theatre 1863. Free Public Library. Bush St. above Kearny." with "1863" crossed out and "1870" penciled in. View of large theater and library building with arched windows. Firehouse next door (right). Tall flagpole in between. Tracks of the Central Railroad Co. can be seen on Bush Street along with a large boulder and assorted trash. Theater was built by William Ralston.
Text written under photo: "California Theatre Bush St. 1870. This theatre at the time of its opening January 18, 1869 was considered to be the best equiped [sic] and handsomest [sic] theatre in the United States. It opened with the play of "Money" John T. Raymond playing the character of Graves. The front showing arched windows was known as Pacific Hall where the Free Library was established. The Free Public Library was maintained in this building until the McAllister Street wing of the new City Hall was completed. No. 2 Engine House [under appropriate building]"
