Description
2008-2109 PHOTO: MINES AND MINING: QUICKSILVER: NEW ALMADEN MINES Postcard showing the tollgate at the entrance to the Hacienda area of the New Amaden Quicksilver Mine. Two men are shown to the right of the postcard, one leaning against the gate. The tollgate provided security for the mining area as well as collected a toll on items brought in from the outside and not purchased in the company store. To the right is a tower with a bell that would be sounded in case of fire. The road led through the small community of Hacienda which had a post office, general store, church, school, doctor etc. to serve the miners and their families. In the background can be seen the furnaces where ore was roasted to release mercury. The sign over the gateway commemorates the 100th anniversary of George Washington's inauguration, indicating the original photograph was taken in 1889.
