Charles Handy thought for the day on rediscovering the essentials of life, and how there is some spiritual certainty and purpose beyond the trappings of modern life. Handy begins the thought discussing the bombings in London and how, when people encounter periods of uncertainty or trauma, they prefer to take refuge in the ordinary things to return to normalcy. However, he comments that it is sometimes beneficial and refreshing to enter a state of self-reflection in order to reconnect with life's meaning and discusses his journey to Italy in which he was able to become more acquainted with his own inner sense of self. In particular, he reflects upon his time spent in a church, where he was left silently contemplating his own thoughts and at peace with his stripped down self, and concludes that it is at times when life becomes too complicated that people need to be reminded that there is some certainty and purpose through it all.
