Description
The statue of crystalline limestone is of a seated Buddha in virāsana and displaying the dhyāna mudrā. View form the right. The eyes are half-closed. It is considered one of the best preserved sculpted Buddha statues found in Sri Lanka. Some similarities with Mathura (India) standing Buddha images of the Gupta period include a diaphanous robe and the three ring-like folds of skin around the neck. The face, however, is here ovoid not egg-shaped as in the Mathura image. Height: 1.760 meters.
