Description
This photo is taken looking north on Myrtle from Olive Avenue Nov. 6, 1904. L to R: two story brick building housing the Granite Bank & Trust Company. It was organized in 1903, opened in the old Granite Bank building, and moved to 629 S. Myrtle in 1904. The building was demolished after the Sylmar earthquake 1971. Next is the J.J. Renaker furniture and undertaking business at 627 S Myrtle. Then four storefronts under construction that would later house Asa Casner's Meat Market at 619 and Allen Nye's hardware store at 625 S Myrtle; the building still exists although the facades are changed. To the right by 1908 was the Monrovia Hardware Company at 617 S Myrtle; that building also still exists. The building with the cupola is the J.B. Nichols buildings, moved from 100 block of W Palm. On the east side of the street, the large white building was originally the Monroe & Pile Real Estate office moved from the 400 block of S Myrtle -- in 1904 the G.W. Black grocery store. To its right is the Hardware Store and Tin Shop and a barbershop (Kirk's Tonsorial Parlor -- operated by Henry Kirchenschlager). At far left is Thomas Neville's drug store at his original location at 630 S Myrtle. The Myrtle Ave Street Railway is visible. An arc light is visibile overhead. Inscription: "My Darling Brother: A Merry Christmas to you. Aslo a Happpy New Year and may there be many more in store for you. God Bless you, Retta [Annetta Nye]. 'The uncompleted [hardware] store to the left - just north of the Granite Bank -- is Allen [Nye]'s now. " Annetta Nye was the wife of Able Nye; their son, Allen, had the hardware store noted above at approximately 625 S. Myrtle.
