Photograph caption dated May 31, 1929 reads, "Colonel Thomas A. Davis, president of the San Diego Army and Navy academy, is pictured at left, accepting the William Randolph Hearst rifle shoot trophy from Meredith R. Pratt, representative of The Evening Herald, who made the presentation on behalf of Mr. Hearst. The San Diego academy won the trophy, the magnificent silver shield shown in the picture, by scoring highest in the western military school division of the national Hearst rifle contest."
