Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of this recording Kevin Okino was an Assistant Bridge Engineer for Caltrans Design Division. Okino after seeing the Loma Prieta Earthquake damage on television volunteered to assist in any way he could. He was sent to the Cypress structure to watch the shoring to make sure the structure was safe and to assist with locating cars that were under the collapsed deck and to core holes in the upper deck to have the first responders retrieve the victims and cars. Later he investigated the buildings at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza.
