Hopi woman tending an oven, with several large pots nearby.
Title transcribed from item. Signed on mount: "© Frederick Monsen." Monsen's typed label on back says: "Hopiland. Arizona. The Hopi are a tribe of Indians, speaking a Shoshonean dialect, occupying seven pueblos on a reservation two thousand square miles in Northern Arizona. The Hopi first became known to white men in the summer of 1540, when Pedro de Tobar was dispatched from Zuni to visit. Tobar was with the Coronado expedition and described the Hopi as being a very mild and pleasant people. There are about 1,600 Hopi at the present time. Photograph. Old Hopi woman cooking dinner."
