I flere årtusinder var årsag og sammenhænge i sygdommen ukendte. Som følge heraf opstod megen overtro og frygt. Denne overtro og frygt eksisterer endnu i mange kulturer og med god grund. Selv om sygdommen er gammel, ved man stadig forholdsvis lidt om den, idet bacillen, der forårsager sygdommen, er meget svær at studere i laboratorium. Slide Series, Bangladesh 1990: "Leprosy - the old scourge" - No. 01: A leper woman. Leprosy is one of the oldest known diseases of humanity. For thousands of years the cause and contexts were unknown. Consequently superstition and fear occurred, and with good reason still exist in many cultures. Although the disease is ancient, our knowledge about it is relatively limited, as the bacillus causing the disease is very difficult to study in the laboratory. And still effective vaccine and survey methods are not available. Only since 1940-1950s they managed to find an effective medication against leprosy, and get this into systematic use.
