2009-0085. In PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM: **F869 B15 B36, pg. 20. In: Bakersfield : photograph album. Shows the metal framework of the Mechanics Savings Bank on corner of Mason and Market. Building housing construction company, Lindgren-Hicks Co., on right side of building. Buildings visible behind and to either side. Horse drawn vehicles along side of street. Monument of winged woman atop column, young man holding flag at base of column. Mechanics Savings building constructed at end of 1906, beginning of 1907. Designed by architect L.B. Dutton. Monument known variously as Admissions Day Monument, The Spirit of the Pioneer, or Native Sons Monument. Figures sculpted by Douglas Tilden, base & column by Willis Polk. Presented to city, in 1897, by James Phelan to commemorate admission of California to union and to honor the Native Sons of the Golden West.
