The instructor Harry Claflin (front row, L-R), pairs up with the survival school student Jack Madeley to demonstrate fighting techniques. In the background, other survival school students Ron Venn, Allen Mons, Marilyn Chandler, Joel Turner, and Brian Schwarz huddle around to observe. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces.
