Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Elena's identification photo from her time in a German labor camp during World War II. At 16, Elena was taken from her home in Nalchik, Russia, during a trip to the market and was put in a labor camp. She immigrated to the United States in 1949 with her husband and daughter, first to Detroit and later settled in Montebello, California, among a community of Armenians.
