Image of a firefighter's certificate of service from the Alameda Fire Department of Alameda, California, made out in manuscript to John G. Lubben and dated July 29, 1893; with four surrounding vignettes depicting firefighters fighting fires and driving towards burning buildings with horse-drawn firefighting vehicles including a hook and ladder truck, hose carriage, and manual fire engine, as well as a top-center vignette of Columbia, the goddess of Liberty, sitting in a field looking at a paper with a shield labeled "California," a bear, sheaths of wheat, and a fireman surrounding her; the vignettes and certificate are bordered by two hoses attached to a fire hydrant and firefighting equipment including ladders, preventers, axes, speaking trumpets, and fire hats; the certificate has an embossed seal of the Alameda Fire Department. Single-color print; date based on year certificate was issued. "R.H."--text, artist.'s initials, bottom left of image. "Schmidt Label & Litho. Co. S.F."--text, bottom right margin. "This is to certify that John G. Lubben. having served the time prescribed by the laws of the State of California in the Alameda Fire Department is an Exempt Fireman and is entitled to all the privileges granted under said laws Joined the Department April 1888 Certificate issued July 29th 1893 T.R.
