Description
View looking south on New High Street in downtown Los Angeles, California, towards the intersection with Temple Street. The steep roof of Saint Athanasius Episcopal Church can be seen at the intersection with Temple Street at right and the side of a two-story building with the sign "Furniture & Bedding" can be seen, presumably on Spring Street.
"173 High St. (South)"--text, handwritten in front margin. "Southern California H.T. Payne, Los Angeles, Calif."--text, printed and handwritten in front margin. "St. Athansius Episcopal Church at right, Temple & New High St., early 70's"--text, handwritten note on verso. Title transcribed from item; date approximated by cataloger based on general development of city and history of photographer who began working in Los Angeles around 1874 (see C. Mautz, Biographies of Western Photographers, 130)
