Mateo Calandrino, posing with his fishing pole. Calandrino started the Race Street Fish and Poultry Market with his wife Jennie at 253 Race Street in San Jose, after purchasing the vacant house around 1944. They sold the business to Gino Barsanti and Ugo Stefani in 1947. Born in San Francisco to Italian immigrants, and one of 8 children, Calandrino was an avid sailor his entire life, operating a charter fishing boat for 30 years.
