Description
As viewed from the east and across Capitol Park's Rose Garden in this circa 1990 postcard, is the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Dedicated in December 1988 after a fund drive that reached nearly 2,000,000 dollars, the memorial is composed of four granite panels, each boasting interpretive sculptures: one depicts two young soldiers preparing to attack, one shows a prisoner of war sitting, one reveals a nurse tending to the wounded, and one depicts two soldiers walking. In the center is a flagpole and a young man reading a letter sent from his stateside home. Set in the northeastern corner of Capitol Park, the memorial is the creation of sculpture and artist Rolf Kriken.
