Photograph caption dated March 2, 1983 reads, "The remains of the LAPD helicopter, its tail dangling, that crashed at 51st Street and Broadway, killing a reserve officer and injuring two." Pilot Sgt. Ronnie Hansen and Officer Tom Brooks were onboard with the accident victim, Reserve Officer Stuart Taira, who was scheduled to use a video camera to capture damage caused by a tornado that had hit South Los Angeles. Soon after take-off, the helicopter struck a power line and crashed to the ground. Taira was struck by a rotor when he stepped out of the damaged Bell Jet Ranger.
