Description
Franciscan missionaries planted the first olive trees in California in 1769, where they thrived in the rich soil and moderate climate. By the mid 1880s California olive oil had earned a reputation of quality comparable to any European import, and in 1898 olives had become the main cash crop in the Oroville region, replacing oranges.
