Photograph caption dated January 2, 1939 reads, "Curly haired little Shirley Temple, Hollywood's No. 1 box office star, today leads the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena as its grand marshal. It is the first time in the 50-year history of the fete that a child has led the parade. She chose to wear a white cloth coat with ermine muff. She carried a bouquet of roses."
