Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. The Ahn family residence (left, not visible) was where Helen Ahn and her five children lived from 1936 until 1946. The home was later moved to 34th Street and is now occupied by the USC Korean Studies Institute. Susan Ahn (later Ahn Cuddy) in her WAVES uniform on Downey Way in Los Angeles. She was the first Korean American in the WAVES, the women's division of the U.S. Naval Reserve in the 1940's. She also went to Pensacola Gunnery School to become the first woman gunnery officer.
