Black and white lantern slide showing a head and shoulders illustration of Paul Emil von Lettow Vorbeck, leader of the German colonial troops in German East Africa. After an initial attack from British forces in the Uganda Protectorate, von Lettow Vorbeck launched a series of guerrilla attacks against the British in August 1914, with the aim of tying down as many British troops as he could away from the fighting in the Western Front. von Lettow Vorbeck was severely outnumbered by the British troops, but he evaded capture until he surrendered after the Armistice, on 25 November 1918. This slide comes from a set on the activities of the King’s African Rifles battalions in Nyasaland. It was originally held by the Church of Scotland, and generated by J.W MacKay.
