This composite of portraits of early California pioneers shows members of the Sacramento Society of California Pioneers. The organization was composed of - as stated in the "Constitution and By-Laws of the Sacramento Society of California Pioneers" for 1891: "native Californians, foreigners, and citizens of the United States resident in California prior to the first of January of the year eighteen hundred and fifty." As time went on, however, and members passed away, the prerequites changed in order to sustain the membership into the twentieth-century. Notable past Presidents include the founder of the Sacramento Bee, James McClatchy, physician and author of the first history of Sacramento, John Frederick Morse, and physician and Sacramento's first Superintendent of Education, Harvey W.
