Photograph was edited for publication purposes. From his deathbed in 1925, Grandfather Manuel Mantijo, 103, pointed a trembling finger toward his Boyle Heights back yard--now the playground of the Malabar Street School. Unable to speak, he was trying to tell the family he had buried a cache of gold coins in the area--or so believes his granddaughter, Mrs. Angie Parra, 46, of 1147 No. Alma Ave. On May 23, 1959, she and a friend, Adolph Flores Trinidad, were trying to prove the truth of the story by conducting a search of the playground with a metal detector. The school district gave permission on the condition they share in 50 per cent of the gross take if the gold was there.
