Description
“Api [Épi] - Native Women, heathen. Rev. John Inglis D. D., in his ‘In the New Hebrides’ writes about the natives:- ‘They are quite an improvable race, and are eager to imitate their superiors. In their movements they are active and energetic. They work well at any kind of unskilled labour, and at what may be native skilled labour, and when trained they evince a fair aptitude for acquiring a knowledge of European skilled labour. The women make excellent nurses and good domestic nurses.’” Group portrait of four indigenous women wearing traditional dress. John Inglis (1808-1891) and his wife arrived on Aneityum in 1853. They were commissioned by the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland. In the New Hebrides: Reminiscences of Missionary Life and Work was published in 1887.
