Barnum and Bailey Circus officially opened at the Sports Arena Wednesday night before a near-capacity crowd. There were clowns in ragged clothes, huge shoes, red noses. Musical spectacles. Tonto, the lion, Harold Alzana, the man who defies death and gravity on his high wire. Hotdogs and cotton candy. Beautiful girls in spangled tights, elephants and acrobats and Galla Shawn cavorting on her high, unprotected swinging trapeze. Tigers, bears, dogs and ponies. Bareback riding troupes. Juggling cyclists. 'The Greatest Show on Earth.' It ends Oct. 1." Photograph caption reads, "Tonto, the lion, relaxes between acts - He's vicious and wild in the ring of wild animals."
