Photograph caption dated October 22, 1956 reads, "Buried missile set for stratosphere - Powerful Nike guided missile sticks its nose skyward from underground chamber at launching site near Vanowen street and Balboa boulevard. This is one of many missile protection centers ringing San Fernando Valley. It is manned by soldiers from 551 AAA Missile Battalion based at old Birmingham Hospital.
