Black and white lantern slide showing sampans, people and multi-story buildings next to the Han river, a tributary of the Yangtze (Chiangjiang) running through Hankow (Hankou). The Han acted as an important transport route through the southern part of the North China Plain, providing a much more direct route for junks than the Yangtze in Hubei for the journey between Wuhan and Jingzhou. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
