The name, Buduruwagala, means "Rock of Buddhist images." Budu" refers to the Buddha, "ruva," to image and "gala" to a rock. The site comprises seven Buddhist figures carved out of the face of the rock (as bas-reliefs) with a central figure of the Buddha. Traces remain of white plaster used to cover the carved out figures. The rock is visually suggestive of a kneeling elephant with a bowed head. Approach to the site with seven Buddhist images carved out of the living rock, six of which are derived from Mahāyāna traditions. See discussion of individual statues.
