Description
Note: "Brennholzträgerin. (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6).
Note translation: "Woman carrying firewood. Very little usable wood grows near the town of Fumban. The nearest forest is four hours away, down in the valley of the fast-running Nyi. The women and girls have to go there if they want to fetch firewood. The paths are bad, they have to go through high grass and through water that almost comes up to their chins, over stock and stone, up hill and down dale, but they get there where the trees grow thickly and beat down the long creepers from the thick treetrunks. The loads which the women then carry back into the town are long and unmercifully heavy. But considering the long distance which they have to go you can understand why the poor things carry home as much wood as possible. The silver moon is already in the sky, and the stars twinkle, as the heavily loaded woman with her firewood returns, dead tired, to her compound up the hill. How happy the little woman [sic] is when she can throw down the heavy load at last. Noble women naturally do not go to the forest themselves. They send their slaves, or they buy wood on the market, if they do not have any slaves themselves. For us the price which has to be paid is incomprehensibly low. A poor Bamum woman carries a heavy load of wood for four hours, and at the end she can sell it on the big market in the town for 35-45 pfennig." (A. Wuhrmann, 1917, "Commentaries to Slides from Bamum" E-30-0,6, K 384).
