Description
Note translation: Published as no 51 in the album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer', Neuchâtel 1895. (RI). - Caption in the album: "Adow-Kwame with carrying-chair and carrying-basket. - The chief, with his child on his lap, is surrounded by his entourage. On the upper left one sees his big palanquin, to the right on the floor is the carrying-chair decorated with furniture nails. Both were made here. Whenever he goes on a journey or to see the King he lets himself be carried either in the palanquin or on the chair." - In the French caption it is the palanquin which is specifically stated to be of local make, the origin of the chair is left open. (PJ 7/98). - A curous point about this photograph is that the chief appears not to be wearing sandals - i.e. his bare feet are resting on the earth. His left foot seems to be bandaged. (PJ 07.1998).
