Description
Monrovia Public Library (Carnegie). "Andrew Carnegie's literary benevolences reached Monrovia in 1905, in an offer that, "If the city agree by resolution of council to maintain a free public library at a cost of not less than $1,000 per annum and provide a suitable site for the building, Mr. Carnegie will be glad to give $10,000 to erect a free public library building for Monrovia. This offer was accepted and the city council immediately set about to call for a bond election to purchase a library site. This later developed into the purchase of the Granite Block for a city hall, and the balance of the block upon which it stood for a park and library site." John L. Wiley, History of Monrovia, 1927, p 93-94.
