Description
This circa-1955 photograph shows the interior of the filter control gallery at Sacramento's water filtration plant. It was equipped with 16 filters, each accommodating a normal capacity of 4 million gallons of water a day. Filters consisted of four layers of graded gravel and a layer of sand, 24 to 30 inches deep. Water would travel to the filters after sedimentation and prior to storage and delivery.
