Description

The Clarence W. Pierce School of Agriculture is a two-year community college in Woodland Hills, California. It opened in September 1947, with 70 students and 18 faculty members and is part of the Los Angeles Community College District. The school's initial focus was crop cultivation and animal husbandry, and still retains a large swatch of open fields for hands-on working farm training. In 1956 the school was renamed Los Angeles Pierce College.
Photograph article dated September 9, 1960 partially reads, "'Clarence' today is looking forward with stolid fortitude to another chapter in his collegiate career. Such mundane subjects as geometry, English and history worry this campus dweller not in the least. Nor will the pretty coeds who will soon be flitting and flirtying from class to class cause him to turn so much as an eyelash... 'Clarence' is no ordinary collegian, but a soft grey, hump-backed Brahma bull making education a life-time career at Pierce College." Pictured are Luann Van Syoc, 19, and Jack Sanden.
